FHD Version / 4K Version High-Definition North Korean Art Film — For TV Broadcast & Cinema Screening

🎵 Origin & Background

This film was inspired by the popular song "A City Girl Comes to the Village" — one of the signature songs of vocalist Ri Kyong-suk of the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble, released in 1990.

The song became one of the most beloved popular works in North Korean music history, and the film adaptation brought its themes to life on the silver screen.

📖 Synopsis

Li Hyang, a highly skilled seamstress from a prestigious garment factory in Pyongyang, travels to the countryside to volunteer in rice-planting season (monaegi bongsa).

There, she meets Sŏng-sik, a hardworking and talented young man dedicated to the mechanization and modernization of agricultural life in his rural village.

At first, the two clash — Li Hyang is reluctant to consider a future with a country man, while Sŏng-sik holds his own prejudices about city girls. Their initial friction gives way to understanding and affection as misunderstandings are gradually resolved.

In time, Li Hyang returns to the countryside — this time for good. She and Sŏng-sik are reunited, and the story culminates in their marriage, as Li Hyang chooses a new life rooted in the village she once doubted.

🌟 Cultural Significance & Current Relevance

Upon its original release, A City Girl Comes to the Village captivated audiences with its warm romantic storyline enriched by lighthearted comedic elements — a rare and beloved combination in North Korean cinema.

More than 30 years after its production, the film has been re-broadcast on North Korean television, drawing renewed public attention.

Chairman Kim Jong-un has personally praised the original song, stating:

"In every verse of the song, the idea of thoroughly implementing the Socialist Rural Thesis — building our country's villages into culturally rich and livable communities — is conveyed with sincerity and simplicity."

Since 2023, North Korea has launched major national campaigns targeting rural development — including the construction of local industrial factories, rural housing, and hospitals — and criticism of regional underdevelopment.

Against this backdrop, A City Girl Comes to the Village has re-emerged as a culturally and politically resonant work, actively promoted through state media.
